Laureana Cilento
The first mention of Laureana appears in a document from January 1090 (an inhabitant of Lauriana); there are other mentions in other writings from 1110 and 1165. Founded in the Longobardo period, it followed the fortunes of the Sanseverino princes for the entire medieval period. It is a refined and cultural town with a lot of noble palaces still standing today in the area, a real treasure chest of local history to be visited at any time of the year. There are settlements that make you believe there was a strong presence of Basilian monks that had fled from the East. As farmers and craftsmen, these monks knew how to combine work with spiritual meditation, thus integrating into the social fabric of the period. Given the size of the territory and the population of the town which in 1951 was about 2000 inhabitants, Laureana can be considered one of the most important municipalities of the MonteStella.
